New name, new Directors new strategy!

June 1, 2012

A lot of work has been going on behind the scenes this year.

We took the time to have significant strategy meetings to discuss the focus and future of ISPEN. It was felt that the name of our organisation didn’t properly reflect our objectives and so took the opportunity to propose to the membership a change of name to IrSPEN – The Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism. The acronym of the organisation was kept as similar as possible to avoid confusion and minimise printing and logo changes.

At this time we identified our key priorities as being:

  • Effective nutritional education programme for doctors/GPs.
  • National screening programme/improved nutritional management of patients across hospital/community healthcare settings.
  • High quality, evidence-based nutritional care for every patient, with a focus on making all nutritional care available to patients in their home or community setting.
  • Fostering local research / providing a forum for its dissemination.

This year our plans are to continue and develop our very successful Medical Education programme for NCHDs and SpRs in the RCPI.

We are also nearing the publication of a report on the status of Home Parenteral Nutrition in Ireland and we will be working on a report highlighting the Scale and Cost of Disease Related Malnutrition in Ireland. Planning is underway for our conference to be held in March 2013 and we look forward to sending you further details of this when we get them.

Our inaugural AGM was held 18th April 2012 and at this meeting the new name change was passed and Prof Donal ‘Shea, Dr Orla Crosbie and Philomena Flood were elected as Directors of IrSPEN.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Professor John Hyland, Professor Garry Courtney and Janis Morrissey for their support and work in the early stages of our development.

And finally if you would be interested in contributing more to IrSPEN we would be delighted to hear from you.

We have a Research, Education and Training, Communications and Standards and Guidelines Committees and looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our ranks! Please email info@irspen.ie for further information.
