Home Enteral Nutrition (HEN) is a key area identified by IrSPEN members for guideline development. A multi-professional Working Group and Review Group have been established to develop standards of care and practical guidelines for safe and effective discharge of HEN patients from an acute care setting and follow-on care in the community.
An initial meeting of the Working Group took place in Dublin on 17th February 2015. A large turnout demonstrates the motivation and enthusiasm of all involved (there wasn’t a seat left vacant!). Break-out sessions considered what good care should look like for HEN patients in Ireland, which standards apply to adults and which apply to children, what should be included under each standard, and how to involve patients. Six overarching standards were identified. Subgroups were assigned and timeframes agreed.
Currently, there are six subgroups, each with six to nine members. A range of disciplines are represented, with members from 11 Irish counties, reflecting the multidisciplinary and the national nature of HEN care. Patient input will also form a very important part of this initiative.
